Choreography of Space II

The Landscape Architecture of Salmon Bay Park in Ballard, Seattle, is a great example of how space can be choreographed to create, in this case, a vast, bucolic feel in a limited space, and a delightful experience.

In this case, the foot path winds around a constructed knoll (you can tell it's constructed because the path defines its edge), creating suspense to see what happens around the bend. The bench becomes a sculptural element perched atop the hill under a big tree, and also a destination with a promising view. Through the space carved away by the path, further hills are revealed beckoning to be explored.  Through these simple moves, the Landscape Architect (unknown to me) actively enlivens the users' experience as they move through the park.
