Steinberg and Perception

Thanks to my friend Steve for turning me on to Saul Steinberg, an artist who had the rare gift of being aware of his own perception and the ability to put it on paper.

This June Saul Steinberg and the Urban Landscape will be added to the long to the long list of titles about Steinberg and his art, and rightly so, considering how much of his work depicts the built environment.
View of the World from 9th Avenue, Saul Steinberg, 1976 (Quest)
Autogeography, Saul Steinberg, 1966 (Quest)
Looking out of Steinberg's eyes at these landscapes makes the vast subject matter instantly relatable.  Now that GPS has made directional maps nearly obsolete, a sense of meaning is what I really want from a cartographer.
