Urban Sketch II

Rock Garden at Union Station
Here is a sketch of another refuge at the Union Station development in the International District of Seattle.

Located on the north side of the sloping glazed wall of the landmark Vulcan building, this hidden rock garden gets fantastic afternoon light on a summer day. I appreciated the privacy and quietness the designers (Murase Associates) intended. This view is a great example of what I think of as an urban collage. Framed by Japanese Maple and Bamboo foliage, the corner of King Street Station is visible with it's campanile reflected in the mirrored wall of the Union Station building.  In-progress construction of Stadium Place and old Pioneer Square buildings behind bring the count up to four eras of building represented in one vista.
