Public Art as Place-Making

On Seattle Free Walking Tours, we talk about how Seattle loves its functional art. The Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs is bringing this love into the establishment by developing a "place-making program focusing on how to best activate the City's physical landscape" according to their meeting this evening.  Place-making expands the traditional role of public art to include the interconnectivity of art and public works projects, temporary installations, and performance pieces that all respond to or encourage local identity.

The "neighborhood library" in Crown Hill, below, enlivens the pedestrian experience and encourages casual gathering.  This simple piece is a shining example of the potential of interactive, site-responsive art as a place-making tool.
