The Gold Standard: Portland, OR

Any blog on urbanism has to start with Portland, the poster child of Sustainability!  Here are the two most innovative things I saw on my short trip to Portland last week:

1. Floating bike/ped path on the river. When the river bank is too crowded with freeways, Portland expands to the water. Check out the dense bike network in Portland. It is also notable that towns 200 miles south of Portland also have extensive bike lanes, go Oregon!
Eastbank Esplanade (with a view of Steel Bridge) is populated by runners and bikers serious enough to yell at me for standing in the middle to take pictures even on a Monday afternoon .
2. Food trucks everywhere!  Restaurants are passe in Portland unless they are on wheels.
Food trucks in the Hawthorn District, complete with a vintage coin-op carousel and bike tourists (us).
